DAY 1 ULAANBAATAR CITY
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. You’ll be greeted at the airport and escorted to 3* hotel. City tour: National History Museum, Gandan Monastery, National Mongolian traditional show concert.
DAY 2 ULGII TOWN CENTER WESTERN MONGOLIA
We embark on our flight to the Mongolian farwest. We fly over the central lakes and the Western mountains, and reach Ulgii. We arrive in the capital of province that is the most Westerly in the place of the world that is the farthest from the oceans. Ulgii is located at 1636 km (1,02 mile) from UlaanBaaatar, at 1710 meters (1,06 mile) above the sea level. Principally Kazakhs live there and its atmosphere is very influenced by Central Asia : many signs written in Arabic, mosques and their cupolas pricked up to the sky. Visit of Ulgii Museum that shows an exhibition about the fauna and flora of the area. We discover the Kazakh culture, notably with traditional costumes and with a Kazakh yurt built in the museum.
DAY 3 SYRGAAL VALLEY
We drive until the Syrgaal area. This very remote area, separated from China by high snowy summits, has the two beautiful lakes Khoton and Khurgan where the Khovd River has its source. Meeting with a horses breeders family and horse assignment.
DAY 4 KHURGAN LAKE
We’ll start our pony trek throughout the Syrgaal area and will reah the first of the two lakes of Altai Tavan Bogd : Khurgan Lake. Possibilities to meet one of the Kazakh breeders families living there.
Khurgan lake located in the northern part of the Altai Mountain range, streches over 23 km long and 6 km wide. Towered by glaciers, the waters of the lake mainly originate from the glacial meltwater, maintaining hence a low temperature of 8 to 10 degrees celsius in June. It’s from October that the surface of the lake starts to freeze, creating then 1.3-1.6 m ice thickness.
This exceptional place, sets in a dazzling scenery, offers an unspoilable view on the glaciers and their snow-capped mounts; besides the 20 emerging islands. The forests along the shorelines and the hills surrounding the lake are the home of many species of birds such as whooper swan, goose, eagle, hooded crane and various species of ducks. Also, during the flyway migration, it is possible to observe on the site: pelicans, ruddy shelducks, northern lapwings and common goldeneyes.
DAY 5 KHOTON LAKE
Ride along Lake Khurgan to reach the second big mountain lake of this area : Khoton Lake. At Southwest, the high summits of Altai surround us. We ride on along Lake Khoton. Khoton Lake is jointly bounded to Khurgan lake, nestled at 2800 meters, in the northern part of the Altai Mountain range. The high capped peaks and the glacial moraines surrounding represent 1341 million square meters . Its surface area is 50 km2 with an average depth of 26 meters. It is early in autumn that the lake starts freezing to get until 1.7m ice thickness at the core of winter. The greenish and greyish colors of the waters contrasts with the magnificent snow capped summits. In late spring, the waters of the lake start to be fed again with the melting ice of the summits, but also by the 10 rivers flowing in it. A small island emerges on the surface, with on its top a forest and bushy trees. On the shoreline of the lake, a dense forest is home to many species of birds. The site is also an ideal place for fishing due to the abundance of fish in its cristal clear water.
DAY 6-7 TAKHILBAIN VALLEY
During one day and a half, we will ride on the lush Tahilbai Valley to reach the green lake, small mountain lake with clear water, where the bravest of you can swim. You will see beautiful landscapes with lakes and forests of larches. This wild, remote area has may natural springs.
DAY 8-9 MONGOL ALTAI MOUNTAINS
We ride across the Mountains of Altai (we’ll ride 36 kilomètres (22,37 miles) in total) . 3600 metres (2,24 miles) above the sea level, you will enjoy a stunning view on the wild landscapes of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park. We settle our camp in the snowy sites nearby the pass.
DAY 10 SHIVEET KHAIRKHAN MOUNTAINS
We ride over 16 kilometres (9,94 miles) along the Tsagaan Valleyand ride down towards a small mountain lake at southeast of Shiveet Khairkhan Mount where we settle our camp. Shiveet Khairkhan is a sacred mountain for the Tuva living in the area. Visit of the site of Tsagaan Sailaa. On 15 kilometres (9,32 miles), we can observe about 10000 rock paintings on the rocks that cover the southern bank of white river, Tsagaan River.
DAY 11 ULGII TOWN
Drive to Ulgii town center.
DAY 12 BACK TO THE ULAANBAATAR CITY
Flight to Ulaanbaatar. Rest of the day free. With our guide, you can go shopping in the center of the city.
DAY 13 HAVE A GOOD JOURNEY AND SEE YOU SOON
Breakfast at the hotel. We go with you to the international airport of Ulaanbaatar. The transfer can be organized at the time you want, according to the schedule of your flight.
